Apple are either being very clever or very silly.
Problem: The new iPhone ‘8’ is expected to cost on or around $1000 – another year-on-year increase which is slowly putting off purchasers and allowing them to look at cheaper handsets from manufacturers like OnePlus, Huawei and Moto.
Solution: Delay (to a degree) the iPhone 7 Product Red and iPhone SE2 to give people a more ‘normal’ priced iPhone in H2 2017.
A benefit of this tactic is that it will clear the way for the Apple fan-boys to pay the higher price and get hands on with the device a lot quicker. This will also offset the expected delay in fulfillment which new high end Apple devices seem to suffer from each year.
The down-side is that it will put off prospective buyers and marr the Apple brand as overpriced and under-delivered, especially if stock fulfillment is as bad as it is expected to be. With iPhone 7 sales already suffering with the news of the iPhone 8, Apple are taking a huge gamble if the expectedly high pricepoint turns out to be correct.
