Tilt Shift – Attempt One

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

I’ve seen a few photos with this effect and I think it looks amazing.

The general idea is that it makes a regular scene look like a model or miniature scene.

Here are my attempts:

Airfix Rules

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

This is my first attempt at Airfix in about 15 years. I really enjoyed it and but it only took about 2 hours which isn’t a bad time but I’d have liked it to last longer.

I’d like a go at painting it before construction next time.

iPhone 4 Front Panel Leak?

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

Back Front

There’s very little to go on at this point, just a series of photos posted to a forum by a device repair company, but if their suspicions are correct, this could be the front panel of the presumably upcoming "iPhone 4G." iResQ claims to have obtained the sample part from a "reputable source" that has provided genuine parts to it in the past, parts which iResQ uses for repairing products — even if those products don’t exist yet. Interestingly, the LCD is factory glued to the digitizer on this 4G wannabe (like on the original iPhone), as opposed to them being separate elements on the 3G and 3GS, meaning higher replacement costs. But most notable about this face part is the fact that it’s roughly 1/4-inch taller than previous generations. Your guess is as good as ours as to why it’s taller, since the screens themselves seems very similarly sized. We’re also incredibly curious as to whether this here face would line up with that supposed 4G midboard we saw a little while ago. So, elaborate scam by iResQ to get its name up in lights? Prank played by a fun-loving parts supplier? Earth shattering iPhone form factor change unearthed? And just what is that "reflective surface" supposed to be for?

DARPA job posting talks of developing an autonomous, grenade-wielding robot

Friday, February 5th, 2010

Terminator

DARPA’s just put up a pretty interesting job posting… if you’re the wary-of-our-future-being-controlled-by-robots type, anyway. The call involves a new research and development program called ARM. Basically, DARPA’s looking to build a robot that can use its arms to dexterously and autonomously grasp objects. The quote from the job posting which is raising eyebrows around here says that the bot should be able to "hold an inert grenade with one hand, and pull the pin with the other hand" without any direction from humans. Now, we’re not really trying to hit the alarmist angle, and we’re all for advancements in robot tech… but it seems to us we’d have less to worry about if the job posting had said "should be able to hold a kitten in one hand, and pet it with the other." Right guys?
