Bananaman in China?!

March 9th, 2010 • Cartoon, Random, TechnologyNo Comments »

Sometimes the stats for my Blog amuse me.

It would seem that ‘Bananaman’ (a cheap British cartoon & Beano comic strip from the 80’s) is popular in China?!

Call me presumptuous but I reckon that the person who was directed to my site was more than likely an English teacher working in China… but imagine if they weren’t!

Cold War Monster!

March 9th, 2010 • Random, TechnologyNo Comments »

Allow me to introduce you to possibly the most frightening piece of technology to emerge from the Cold War.

This is an Ekranoplan. It was designed by the USSR as a vehicle that had both land, sea capabilities. The idea behind it was that the huge engines created a cushion of air below it (similar to a Hovercraft but without the skirt) which it could then use to move around at tremendous speeds.

Luckily the Russian government decided not to back it due to cost.

Mentioned recently in the James Bond novel ‘Devil May Care’ when an Ekranoplan is used as part of an attempted terrorist attack on the Soviet Union. The Ekranoplan is destroyed by RAF Vulcan Bombers.

Sony Launch 3DTV… And The Price

March 9th, 2010 • News, TechnologyNo Comments »

Sony Bravia - Monolithic Design

Sony just announced the first of its 3D TV’s to go on sale in Japan. Their new Monolithic styled Bravia is mouth-wateringly beautiful. Of course the $6,444 price tag is also eye-wateringly expensive and the 3D glasses (which work with shutter technology over an IR connection) are an extra $133, while the IR transmitter itself is $55. Meanwhile sitting too close to the TV will prompt a warning to sit back, and looking away for a long period of time will cause the TV to automatically dim itself, thus saving power. Clever use of face-tracking.

As beautiful as it is though, I may wait a while for the prices to drop!

Spring Comes To Manchester Finally!

Spring

A beautiful day finally breaks the bitterness of the winter we’ve had.

I’ve spent the better part of my day off with all the windows open and looking out my window.

A clear sky and not even the hint of a breeze as the limbs of the tree reach towards the great blue; silent and unmoving.

Tilt Shift – Attempt One

I’ve seen a few photos with this effect and I think it looks amazing.

The general idea is that it makes a regular scene look like a model or miniature scene.

Here are my attempts:

Airfix Rules

February 17th, 2010 • ArtyNo Comments »

This is my first attempt at Airfix in about 15 years. I really enjoyed it and but it only took about 2 hours which isn’t a bad time but I’d have liked it to last longer.

I’d like a go at painting it before construction next time.

iPhone 4 Front Panel Leak?

February 14th, 2010 • News, TechnologyNo Comments »

Back Front

There’s very little to go on at this point, just a series of photos posted to a forum by a device repair company, but if their suspicions are correct, this could be the front panel of the presumably upcoming "iPhone 4G." iResQ claims to have obtained the sample part from a "reputable source" that has provided genuine parts to it in the past, parts which iResQ uses for repairing products — even if those products don’t exist yet. Interestingly, the LCD is factory glued to the digitizer on this 4G wannabe (like on the original iPhone), as opposed to them being separate elements on the 3G and 3GS, meaning higher replacement costs. But most notable about this face part is the fact that it’s roughly 1/4-inch taller than previous generations. Your guess is as good as ours as to why it’s taller, since the screens themselves seems very similarly sized. We’re also incredibly curious as to whether this here face would line up with that supposed 4G midboard we saw a little while ago. So, elaborate scam by iResQ to get its name up in lights? Prank played by a fun-loving parts supplier? Earth shattering iPhone form factor change unearthed? And just what is that "reflective surface" supposed to be for?
