Apple’s next smartphone iteration will reportedly pack new screen technology that shaves a small amount from the screen thickness. According to the Wall Street Journal’s sources, the new in-cell technology integrates the touch sensor into the screen, shedding around half a millimeter and due to the reduced space between screen and user, could well improve image quality. Although a mere 0.5 mm reduction may not mean much for the phone’s frame, it could help offset any weight added by a larger screen. The Wall Street Journal also reports that the still-LCD screens will be made by joint venture Japan Display, LG Display and Sharp. Manufacturers are apparently battling to maintain high-yield rates on the new screen technology, which until now has been limited to bigger displays.

How amazing is this? Independent web designer and Paper Crave reader, Melody Chou, recently had the chance to work as part of a design team at Taiwan-based Medialand to create a mind-blowingly awesome paper project for their client, clothing company Giordano. The client had already been using cardboard in their promotional materials, and the team used the material to develop entire cities made of cardboard!
Taiwan, France, England, Italy, America, China, Japan, and Spain were all given the “cardboard treatment” as part of Giordano’s “Say Hi to the World!” concept, and I’m simply blown away by the detail in all of the cardboard creations.

The Wall Street Journal has weighed in on rumors of Apple’s smaller iPhone, and citing “people familiar with the matter” the publication says that the rumors are likely true. One such familiar person reportedly saw a device half the size of the iPhone 4, bearing the codename “N97,” and said that the handset will be only about half the size of the original, and at only around half the price too. Amazingly, those anonymous sources continued to divulge information, expressing the idea that Apple could finally make its MobileMe cloud service suite free, and that it just might be the platform from which Apple could finally launch a streaming music platform and lessen the need for all those gigabytes of flash storage in your pocket. We’ll let you know if or when any of that happens, okay?

[Aram Bartholl] is building his own file sharing network that screws those fat cats who want to control your freedom. He’s added file cache devices throughout NYC (five so far but more to come) that are anonymous and free to use. Upload what you want, download what you want. They’re completely offline which means monitoring who’s doing what gets a lot harder and quite possibly requires a warrant from a Judge.
As for the dangers of a malicious USB device; I think everyone knows they’re taking on some risk when connecting to a USB plug protruding from a brick wall. Not to mention most people will mostly end up putting porn on them…
